The government of Upper Bavaria has made significant strides in the development of the Second Danube Bridge and the east bypass in Neuburg, with indications that a construction permit might be issued as early as 2025.

The progress of the project has been met with optimism from local officials, such as Kronstorf Mayor Christian Kolarik, who anticipates further advancements soon. The second Danube bridge, as planned, includes a river crossing with two pillars in the river, which has been a subject of controversy due to its proposed passage through the Auwald. There is resistance in Bergheim due to concerns about a significant increase in through traffic on the state road.

The east bypass and the second Danube bridge are intended to relieve the city centre, improve air quality, and ensure the response times of emergency services. A new connection to the new bridge is planned to be in the north between Ried and Joshofen on the state road 2214.

The "Auwald instead of Asphalt" alliance has fought against the planned bridge but is not fundamentally against another Danube crossing. Despite this, concerns about the potential division of the city due to further intersections at important traffic arteries remain.

The decision for the major project in its current form has been announced, with the government of Upper Bavaria seeing no further objections. The decision was made public at a press conference held on Friday morning.
