Competitive Edge in the Low-Cost Airline Sector Strengthens Through Airbus Agreement

VietJet's Fleet Modernization and Sustainable Growth Strategy

VietJet, the Vietnamese low-cost carrier, is making significant strides in its mission to become a regional aviation hub. The airline's strategic vision, as reflected in its latest orders for Airbus A321neo and A330-900neo aircraft, focuses on expanding its international network and upgrading its fleet for long-haul operations.

The A321neo, the largest member of Airbus's A320neo Family, offers a 50% reduction in noise and over 20% savings in fuel and CO2 emissions compared to previous models. This makes it an ideal choice for efficient, fuel-efficient medium-haul flights, supporting growth on regional and international routes.

On the other hand, the larger A330-900neo enables entry into longer-haul markets, including potential new routes such as Europe. This fleet modernization aligns with VietJet's ambitions to expand reach and improve operational sustainability by using next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft.

VietJet's commitment to sustainability is evident in its ranking among the world's lowest in CO2 emissions per passenger, as stated in its 2024 ESG Sustainability Report. In line with this, the A330neo and A321neo are certified to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with plans to reach 100% SAF capability by 2030.

To enhance the passenger experience on these longer-haul flights, VietJet is introducing advanced in-flight entertainment systems, such as Bluebox’s Blueview platform. This reflects a broader strategy of combining low-cost service with growing customer-centric digital innovations, improving service quality while maintaining operational efficiency.

VietJet's aggressive fleet expansion sends a clear message to established low-cost long-haul rivals like Scoot and AirAsia X. The airline has ordered 100 Airbus A321neo aircraft at the 2025 Le Bourget Paris Airshow, with an option for an additional 50 planes. This order marks a significant milestone in VietJet's transformation into a multinational aviation group.

VietJet's Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao envisions Vietjet as a regional aviation hub for various services, including passenger transportation, technical services, logistics, training, research, global supply chains, and aviation infrastructure. With this strategic expansion, VietJet positions itself as a serious long-haul competitor in the aviation industry, moving towards greener travel options as the market shifts in that direction.
