Columbia University allegedly breached civil rights regulations by fostering a hostile environment for Jewish students, as claimed by the Trump administration.
The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Education have accused Columbia University of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to address student-on-student harassment of Jewish students since the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel.
In a statement, HHS alleged that the university fostered a hostile environment for Jewish students over a period of more than 19 months, due to its alleged indifference towards antisemitic incidents. The charges were based on witness interviews, a thorough examination of written policies and procedures, reliable media reports, and findings from Columbia’s own Task Force on Antisemitism.

Title VI prohibits those receiving federal financial assistance from discriminating in program activities on the basis of race, color, or national origin. HHS clarified that this includes discrimination against individuals based on their actual or perceived Israeli or Jewish identity or ancestry.
In a joint notice from HHS and the Department of Education, Acting Director Anthony Archeval of the Office for Civil Rights stated, "The findings carefully document the hostile environment Jewish students at Columbia University have had to endure for over 19 months, disrupting their education, safety, and well-being." The government encouraged Columbia to work with them towards meaningful changes to protect Jewish students.
Columbia University, in a statement issued on Friday morning, acknowledged the findings and stated that it remains committed to combating antisemitism and all forms of harassment and discrimination on its campus.
