Collaboration within The Alliance is shifting towards a more streamlined and flexible, project-focused approach.
In a significant move, a coalition of automotive industry heavyweights, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group, and Rivian, among others, have announced a shift in their organizational structure. The new balance aims to create a more flexible and efficient system, tailored to suit regional requirements, and designed to facilitate quicker decisions across multiple dimensions.
The Alliance will operate with a focus on news-specific cooperation rather than a standardized global model. This change is part of a broader strategy that supports the respective strategic plans of each partner in the Alliance. By the end of 2023, the Alliance's organization is set to transition from a standardized global model to a project-driven cooperation.
The new structure will be adaptable to the evolving trends in the automotive industry, which is experiencing a shift towards more regional markets due to differences in regulations, electrification, and connectivity needs. For each project, the leading company will have autonomy to define specifications and processes tailored to the product requirements of each partner while ensuring compliance with regional regulations.
This project-based approach will also enable quick and agile decisions. The goal is to create a more agile organizational structure that aligns with the overall goal of adapting to the dynamic nature of the industry. The new way of working applies to all functions and projects related to the Alliance.
Under the new setup, the Alliance will continue to leverage each partner's geographical strengths, technical resources, and market expertise. For instance, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are negotiating a deep technical cooperation around sharing engines and transmissions starting in 2027. On the other hand, Volkswagen Group and Rivian are collaborating on semiconductor procurement and technology development to improve innovation and efficiency globally.
The transition is part of discussions with employee representative bodies and is expected to support the implementation of common projects for Europe, Latin America, and India. The new structure aims to facilitate operational efficiencies across multiple dimensions, including markets, technologies, vehicles, and beyond.
Renault Group has also shared a new way of working for functions and projects related to the Alliance. The new approach is designed to be flexible and efficient, aligning with the overall goal of creating a more agile organizational structure. The Alliance's focus on news-specific cooperation rather than a standardized global model is expected to streamline decision-making processes and foster innovation in the automotive industry.
