Clorox Sues Cognizant After $380M Cyberattack
Clorox has filed a lawsuit against its IT provider, Cognizant, following a 2023 cyberattack that resulted in significant damages. The attack, carried out by the hacking group Scattered Spider, exploited vulnerabilities in Cognizant's support procedures.
The incident began when the hackers posed as Clorox employees and asked Cognizant's support staff for passwords. Shockingly, the staff complied without proper verification, leading to a breach. The name of the Cognizant employee involved has not been made public.
The hackers then exploited these credentials to infiltrate Clorox's network. Cognizant's failure to de-activate certain accounts or restore data properly further hampered clean-up efforts. This series of events caused $380 million in damages to Clorox.
Clorox has taken legal action against Cognizant, seeking unspecified damages. The lawsuit highlights the importance of robust security protocols and verification procedures in preventing cyberattacks.
