ChatGPT Now Allows Shopping on Etsy and Soon Shopify, Expanding E-commerce Reach
ChatGPT has expanded its functionality, now allowing users to shop directly from Etsy and soon from Shopify sellers, thanks to a partnership with OpenAI. This integration aims to enhance user experience and explore new revenue streams in online commerce.
OpenAI has not disclosed the specific names of Etsy and Shopify sellers collaborating with them. However, the partnership includes numerous U.S.-based Etsy sellers and over a million Shopify merchants, including notable brands like Skims and Glossier. This integration is made possible by OpenAI's 'Instant Checkout' feature, which is now integrated into ChatGPT.
The new feature allows AI agents, given a credit card, to find and make purchases on a shopper's behalf. This is made possible by OpenAI's work with payment companies like Stripe, which is collaborating on technical standards for purchases through the 'Instant Checkout' system. OpenAI is also exploring new revenue streams by competing with online retail giants like Amazon and Google for purchase fees.
With this integration, ChatGPT users can now buy directly from Etsy sellers while interacting with the chatbot, and this functionality will soon extend to Shopify sellers. OpenAI is transforming ChatGPT into a virtual merchant, helping sell goods for Etsy and Shopify, and potentially reshaping the e-commerce landscape.
