Chad's First Utility-Scale Solar Plant Now Powering 274,000 Homes
Chad has inaugurated its first utility-scale solar plant, the 50 MW / 5 MWh Noor Chad solar plant. This marks a significant milestone in the country's renewable energy journey, with the plant expected to power 274,000 homes. Global South Utilities (GSU) operated the plant, completing their first project in Africa from signature to commissioning within eight months. GSU's CEO, Ali Alshimmari, was honoured with the Officer of the National Order of Chad for this achievement.
The solar plant, established and commissioned by the African Development Bank (AfDB), is a game-changer for Chad's energy landscape. With a capacity of 50 MW and a 5 MWh battery energy storage system, it consists of over 81,000 solar panels and 158 inverters. This project is a testament to GSU's commitment to Africa's renewable energy sector, demonstrating their ability to deliver projects efficiently and effectively.
Chad's solar energy landscape is transforming rapidly. At the end of 2024, the country's cumulative solar capacity stood at 2 MW. However, with the commissioning of the Noor Chad solar plant and ambitious plans to deploy an additional 520 MW of solar capacity by 2030, Chad is poised to become a significant player in the region's renewable energy scene.
The 50 MW / 5 MWh Noor Chad solar plant has commenced operations, providing clean energy to hundreds of thousands of Chadian homes. GSU's successful completion of the project within eight months has not only expanded their footprint in Africa but also earned recognition for their CEO. As Chad continues to invest in solar energy, the Noor Chad solar plant serves as a beacon of progress towards a sustainable energy future.
