CEO of Endeavour to Acquire Sports Betting Enterprises for $450 Million
Endeavour Sells Sports Betting Businesses for Strategic Focus and Financial Gain
Endeavour, a leading sports and entertainment company, has announced the sale of its sports betting businesses, OpenBet and IMG Arena, to OB Holdings Ltd, a company backed by Ari Emanuel. This move is part of a strategic shift for Endeavour, allowing the company to focus more on its core sports and entertainment operations.
The sale was initiated after Silver Lake announced it would take Endeavour private at $27.50 a share. Ari Emanuel, Endeavour's CEO, is planning to purchase the two assets for $450m. Jordan Levin, the CEO of the combined OpenBet and IMG Arena, is participating in the purchase along with other OpenBet executives.
The sale of IMG Arena and OpenBet represents a significant discount on the initial purchase price of OpenBet, which Endeavour acquired for $800m in 2022. This sale is not the first time these assets have been sold, as Endeavour has recently sold On Location, IMG, and PBR for a total of $3.25bn last month.
The sale enables OB Holdings to expand internationally using IMG’s platform and cross-selling opportunities with OpenBet’s sportsbook technology. Ari Emanuel, a key figure in Endeavour's leadership, led the acquisition, signaling a trust in the growth potential internationally through IMG’s global sports data and betting reach, especially beyond the US.
Endeavour's management viewed the sale as an opportunity to capitalize on the value of these assets in the competitive sports betting market. The eventual deal valued at hundreds of millions included provisions where Endeavour is receiving substantial consideration for the divestment.
This move aligns with market trends where companies often focus on their strongest segments and partner or sell off divisions focused on betting and gaming technology, which require specialized focus and investment. The sale also facilitates international growth opportunities for the acquired assets under OB Holdings.
In addition, the sale allows Endeavour to streamline its portfolio by exiting the sports betting technology sector and focus on premium sports content, talent representation, and event management, which are central to its global sports and entertainment leadership.
Bloomberg reported last week that Ari Emanuel is looking to raise money to purchase additional assets. It is unclear at this time whether Ari Emanuel may be considering purchasing other businesses owned by the group. Regardless, Jordan Levin will continue to lead the team after the sale is completed.
Endeavour represents media artists, the NFL, and the NHL, and holds majority stakes in World Wrestling Entertainment and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The company operates a large sports and entertainment empire and is currently in the process of being taken private.
