The Sarsang oil field, operated by the American company HKN Energy, experienced an unfortunate incident on Tuesday, 15th July, 2025. A drone strike targeted the oil field, causing an explosion at one of HKN Energy's production facilities around 7:00 AM local time.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion. Emergency response teams were promptly dispatched to the scene, successfully containing the resulting fire. However, the damage was substantial, leading HKN Energy to suspend operations at the affected facility until a full damage assessment and site security evaluation could be completed.

The Kurdistan Regional Government denounced the drone strike as an act of terrorism, targeting vital economic infrastructure in the region. This attack is part of a series of unclaimed aerial assaults that have been affecting the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk since late June 2025. Some sources link these attacks to Iran-backed militias, although no group has claimed responsibility.

The incident at the Sarsang oil field follows similar drone attacks on other facilities in the region. For instance, the nearby Khurmala oilfield near Erbil was damaged by a drone attack that targeted water pipes, and an airport hosting US troops was also targeted.

In response to the incident, HKN Energy is conducting a full investigation and coordinating with local authorities to manage the aftermath and ensure community safety. The US embassy in Baghdad has also condemned these attacks on critical infrastructure as unacceptable, emphasizing the need for Baghdad to investigate.

The drone strike has caused a significant operational disruption for HKN Energy at the Sarsang oil field, halting production and necessitating emergency firefighting efforts and damage evaluation. The full extent of the damage and the timeline for resuming operations remain to be seen.
