Canada-US Border Car Traffic Plunges, BC Sees 45% Drop

Car traffic across the Canada-US border has seen a significant decrease in recent months, with a notable drop in Canadian-plated cars entering Canada from the US. This trend is evident across all provinces, with British Columbia experiencing the most substantial decline.

In May 2025, the number of Canadian-plated car crossings into Canada from the US plummeted by 45% in British Columbia, from 390,320 to 230,795. Other provinces also witnessed significant decreases: Ontario saw a 26% drop (from 919,454 to 728,685), Quebec and New Brunswick experienced a 42% reduction, Manitoba had a 32% decrease, and Alberta and Saskatchewan saw a 27% decline.

Meanwhile, truck transborder traffic also decreased, but to a lesser extent than car traffic. This could be attributed to commercial arrangements that ensure the continuity of supply chains.

The decrease in car traffic across the Canada-US border is a notable trend, with British Columbia experiencing the most significant drop. While truck traffic also decreased, it did so at a slower pace, likely due to commercial agreements. The reasons behind this trend are not fully clear, but it is evident that cross-border car travel has been significantly impacted.
