Business Video Highlights: Pierre Gattaz,ex-Medef Leader, Opposes Government Subsidies for Businesses
In an interview on "Complément d'enquête" on September 18, 2025, the former president of MEDEF, Pierre Gattaz, shared his views on the state of French entrepreneurship. The interview, available in the "Magazines" section of the France Télévisions site, was broadcast in "Multinationals: the (real) assisted of the Republic?"
Pierre Gattaz believes that French entrepreneurs will excel if French taxes are lowered. He predicts that France will become world champions in business if taxes are reduced to a level comparable to other European countries. However, his opinion does not specify any changes to the existing business aid schemes.
Gattaz is critical of these business aid schemes, stating that they pay hundreds, if not thousands, of people. He suggests that the resources currently used to manage these schemes could be better utilised elsewhere. The business world, he says, is concerned about having more non-producers than producers.
The former boss of bosses is against providing aid to businesses. Instead, he proposes lowering French taxes while keeping the business aid schemes in place. He predicts that this move will encourage businesses to create more value with their employees and engineers, rather than being replaced by non-producers.
It's important to note that the research tax credit (CIR) in France has caused controversies and led to Senate inquiries. The CIR is one of the many business aid schemes in France, with approximately 2,200 such schemes in total, many of which benefit multinationals.
Pierre Gattaz served as the president of MEDEF from 2013 to 2018. His opinion, while personal, is shared with other bosses in the business world. The interview is available for replay on the France Télévisions site.
