British Airways secures a deal for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) with EcoCeres
In a significant stride towards sustainable aviation, renewable fuels producer EcoCeres has entered into a multi-year agreement with Qatar Airways to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This fuel, produced from 100% biomass feedstock, is sourced primarily from waste such as used cooking oil.
Under the terms of the agreement, EcoCeres will provide SAF intended for use by Qatar Airways in its global operations. This move is part of Qatar Airways' commitment to power 10% of its flights with SAF by 2030.
Last year, SAF accounted for 2.7% of Qatar Airways' total fuel use. The deal is expected to help Qatar Airways reduce its lifecycle carbon emissions by around 400,000 tonnes, a significant step towards the airline's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The SAF produced by EcoCeres does not contribute to deforestation or land degradation, making it a sustainable choice for the aviation sector. This use of SAF could potentially lead to a reduction in dependence on fossil fuels in the industry.
The agreement between EcoCeres and Qatar Airways marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. It underscores the growing importance of sustainable practices in the industry and the potential for renewable fuels to play a key role in achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
