Berlin's Central Station Area to Transform with New Skyscraper and Green Spaces by 2025
Berlin is set to see significant changes around its central station area. A new high-rise building is being approved, while the Europaplatz is undergoing a redesign to create a welcoming, green space with improved transfer possibilities. The project, led by Rehwaldt Landscape Architects, aims to transform the area by 2025.
At the heart of this transformation is a controversial 167-meter skyscraper, which, if approved, will become the second tallest in Berlin. Despite prior height limits, the project is under discussion, sparking debate about its scale and urban impact near Warschauer Brücke in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.
The eastern edge of the square will see the addition of a bike park, a Jelbi station, and potentially a WC location. Meanwhile, the creation of the 'Doberitzer Green Belt', a 4.5-hectare green area, will connect the main station with northern districts. Terrazzo paving will be used to create a warm and lively atmosphere.
Rainwater will be collected and used on-site, helping to relieve the sewer system. The 'Green Umbrella' of tall trees will provide screening and a place to rest. The redevelopment is scheduled to be completed by 2025, with the realization of the 'Doberitzer Green Belt' serving as a compensation measure for the construction of federal highway B 96.
The redevelopment of Europaplatz is set to bring significant changes to the area around Berlin's main railway station. With a new high-rise, improved green spaces, and better transfer possibilities, the project aims to create a welcoming and sustainable urban environment by 2025.
