Berlin Considers Olympic Bid, Prepares for 2036, 2040, or 2044
Berlin is considering a bid to host the Paris Olympics, with the city's governing mayor, Kai Wegner, expressing support for the idea. The city is set to establish a committee chaired by Kai Wegner and Iris Spranger to engage and persuade the local population regarding the bid. If successful, Berlin plans to create up to 16 full-time positions to support the project.
Berlin's interest in hosting the Paris Olympics comes amidst a broader bidding process involving refinement of concepts with the German Olympic Sports Confederation by the end of May 2026, followed by a public referendum in June 2026. Initially, Berlin is competing with Hamburg, Munich, and the Rhine-Ruhr region for the national bid. The Senate Chancellery Berlin has already released a press statement regarding the Paris Olympics bid. A project group led by Berlin's Olympic commissioner, Kaweh Niroomand, has been set up to work on the bid. Berlin is planning to allocate up to six million euros in its budget for the years 2025 to 2027 for this purpose. However, Germany's international bidding year for the Paris Olympics has not yet been decided, with 2036, 2040, or 2044 being considered.
Berlin's potential Paris Olympics bid faces an uncertain timeline, with the international bidding year yet to be confirmed. Nevertheless, the city is preparing for the possibility, with a project group in place and significant financial allocation planned. The success of the bid will depend on various factors, including public support and the outcome of the national bidding process.
