Berlin Aims for 25% Solar Power by 2035, Doubling Capacity

Berlin is stepping up its commitment to solar panels, aiming to significantly increase its share of electricity generated from the sun. Experts from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) have deemed a 25 percent solar power share in the city feasible by 2035.

The state of Berlin has set an ambitious target to double its solar power capacity. Currently, solar energy accounts for approximately 4.7 percent of the city's electricity, providing power to around 130,000 households. However, the 'Masterplan Solarcity', adopted in 2020, outlines a goal to increase this share to 25 percent by 2035.

Berlin has already demonstrated progress towards this target, exceeding its 2024 goal of a 3.5 percent solar share. As of the end of 2024, the city's solar share stood at 4.7 percent, with around 42,000 solar installations and a total capacity of 380 megawatts peak (MWp). This expansion is seen as a crucial step in reducing the city's reliance on fossil fuels and achieving its goal of climate neutrality by 2045.

Berlin's commitment to solar panels is evident in its ambitious targets and progress so far. With the support of experts and a clear roadmap, the city is poised to significantly increase its solar power share, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
