Who's Breaking the Pact? China Slams "Softie" Trump in Trade War Ruckus
Beijing criticizes "Mr. Nice Guy" Trump in the customs controversy
Just a couple of weeks ago, the States and China seemingly found common ground in their trade spat. But it seems the peace was short-lived—the Chinese Ministry of Commerce is livid about AI restrictions and the treatment of Chinese students.
The finger-pointing in the trade feud between the USA and China is still going strong. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce denies any wrongdoing, instead accusing the USA of failing to honor the Geneva agreement. The Ministry of Commerce soberly announces defensive measures for China's interests.
The US camp is reportedly increasing discriminatory restraints against China post-Geneva discussions, according to the Ministry of Commerce. Notably, they reference measures that limit AI chip sales andchip design software imports to the People's Republic. Beijing also voices disapproval over the American decision to withdraw visas for Chinese students enrolled in U.S. institutions. The Ministry delivers the verdict: Rather than scrutinizing its conduct, the U.S. is falsely accusing China of disrespecting the consensus.
Let's Get Real
Behind the scenes when the USA and China reached an agreement in mid-May, they agreed to slash mutual tariffs. The temporary truce was set for 90 days. The agreement called for a reduction in U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports from 145 to 30 percent, while Beijing would see its surcharges on U.S. imports decrease from 125 to 10 percent[2].
However, U.S. President Donald Trump has once again taken a hard stance against China: "The grim news is China, as some might not be stunned, has completely disregarded the agreement we've made," Trump shared on his Truth Social platform[3]. "So long, Mr. Nice Guy!"
The Elephant in the Room
Sources indicate that China has kept its promise of reducing tariffs, but other trade barriers, such as rare earth exports restrictions, are still in place in China[2]. Trump suggested that he would sort out this issue in a candid conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping: "Here's hoping we'll locate a solution," he shared during a press briefing in the Oval Office[3]. At this juncture, there's no confirmation from Beijing regarding a potential meeting.
