Banks in India: Open or Closed Status on July 7?
Despite some confusion surrounding Muharram observances, banks in India operated as usual on Monday, July 7, 2025. Muharram, which marks the Islamic New Year and includes the day of Ashura, was observed on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had confirmed that there was no nationwide bank holiday on July 7, and banks were open in all states. This clarification came after some initial uncertainty, as Guru Hargobind Ji's birthday was observed as a bank holiday on July 5 in certain states like Jammu and Srinagar.
It is worth noting that the Indian stock market (BSE & NSE) was also open on July 7, 2025.
On a religious note, Ashura, commemorated by Shia Muslims as the day of Imam Hussein's martyrdom, and Ashura for other Muslims, marking the day when Prophet Moses and the Children of Israel were saved from Pharaoh's tyranny, were observed on July 6 and 7, respectively.
In addition to the usual second and fourth Saturdays of the month, the RBI has scheduled a total of seven bank holidays for the month of July. The next bank holiday will fall on July 14, on the account of Beh Deinkhlam.
Other significant religious events observed during July 2025 include the death anniversary of U Tirot Singh in Shillong on July 17, Drukpa Tse-zi in Gangtok on July 28, Harela in Dehradun on July 16, and Ker Puja in Agartala on July 19.
