Bankrupt CustomCells Secures Deal for Core Operations' Sale

In a significant development, a consortium of several family offices, including existing investors ABACON and SALVIA, have taken over CustomCells Group following the initiation of insolvency proceedings in July 2025. The takeover agreement was swiftly signed, paving the way for the company's restructuring.

The economic difficulties faced by CustomCells were primarily due to the default of the former major customer, Lilium, and strong competitive pressure in the battery cell industry. These issues led to financial troubles that necessitated insolvency.

Despite the challenges, the new owners have pledged to maintain operations at the main site in Itzehoe largely unchanged, retaining around 80% of local jobs. However, the Tübingen plant, which was previously closed, will not be reopened.

Research and development activities, as well as production of battery cells for existing customers, will continue at the Itzehoe technology cluster. The focus will remain on high-performance battery cells for sectors such as defense, aviation, motorsports, and mining.

The completion of the takeover is expected to occur within the coming weeks, marking a new chapter for CustomCells Group. The company will continue its commitment to innovation and quality, as it navigates the competitive landscape of the battery cell industry.

Customers of CustomCells can rest assured that their projects will continue uninterrupted, as the company remains dedicated to delivering top-tier solutions. This change in ownership is a testament to the resilience of CustomCells and its ability to adapt to changing market conditions.

The new owners, composed of family offices like ABACON and SALVIA, aim to inject fresh capital into CustomCells Group, drawing from their resources in both finance and energy sectors. The company plans to leverage this infusion of capital to boost its research and development efforts, particularly in the high-performance battery cells sector, to compete effectively in the demanding battery cell industry.
