In September 2025, several regional bank holidays are scheduled across India, affecting various cities. Here's a breakdown of the bank holidays and the reasons behind them.

On Thursday, September 18, banks in Jammu and Srinagar will be closed to observe the Unitarian Anniversary Day. This day is significant in Meghalaya, where special events and gatherings are held to commemorate the founding of the Unitarian Church in 1887.

The same day, Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi is celebrated in Jammu and Srinagar, as well as in other parts of India with significant Muslim populations.

Moving forward, the banking sector in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Imphal, Jaipur, Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi will be closed on Tuesday, September 30, for Maha Ashtami/Durga Ashtami, the eighth day of Durga Puja and Navratri.

Prior to that, on Monday, September 29, banks in Agartala, Kolkata, and Guwahati will be closed for Maha Saptami, a key day during Durga Puja.

In Jaipur, banks will also be closed on Monday, September 22, for Navratra Sthapna, marking the start of Navratri. Interestingly, Navratra Sthapna is a regional observance in Jaipur as well.

Banks will remain closed on Sunday, September 21, following the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) standard practice of observing Sundays as holidays. Additionally, banks will also be closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, following the RBI's standard practice.

It's important to note that according to the RBI's official calendar, only two bank holidays are scheduled nationwide from September 15-21, 2025. These holidays are linked to regional observances rather than national holidays.

Transactions involving cheques and promissory notes are not processed on these listed bank holidays, as per the Negotiable Instruments Act. However, online and mobile banking services are available, unless there's a technical issue or specific notice from the bank. ATMs remain open for cash withdrawals on holidays.

Moreover, payments can be made via a bank's app or UPI during bank holidays, ensuring continuous financial services for customers.

Stay informed about these upcoming bank holidays to plan your financial transactions accordingly.
