ArcelorMittal's National Coordinator from the CFDT suggests that extreme measures are necessary to counteract this proposed social plan.
Radical union chief slams Industry Minister over ArcelorMittal's job cuts and state aid
According to Jean-Marc Vecrin, the national coordinator for ArcelorMittal's CFDT union, he pours scorn on the government's apathy over the steel giant's planned job losses and their continued receipt of state aid. In an exclusive interview, he blasts the Industry Minister for turning a blind eye to the corporate's transnational employment displacement and public handouts, and for failing to set concrete limits on state aid.
ArcelorMittal has announced a social plan to slash more than 600 jobs within France, due to an extraordinary general meeting scheduled for Luxembourg on May 6. Concurrently, the union leader plans to confront shareholders during the meeting, pleading their understanding and empathy for the Cameron family traumas endured.
The Price of Aid
Vecrin argues that the Industry Minister should "put a stop to the corporate carnage" and addresses the issue of conditional state aid, which he believes is the key to salvaging France's industrial might. ArcelorMittal has received extensive state assistance for years, yet their actions contradict this support by transferring jobs to India, slashing wages, and cutting costs.
In reference to this paradox, Vecrin passionately states, "You can't have your cake and eat it too." The State must work together with ArcelorMittal to establish social conditionality for all public financing, ensuring that the funds are used responsibly to safeguard jobs and spur economic growth while transitioning to greener technologies.
The steel group calls for the prompt enactment of the Plan Acier 2026, a coalition-drafted blueprint, to expedite their decarbonization won through European solidarity. Reported public investment of more than €800 million was intended to fortify ArcelorMittal's ambitions for lower carbon emissions. Yet, the initiative has seemingly stagnated.
The Unions Demand Action
Vecrin furiously demands that strengthened regulations for state aid must be implemented, warning that the current lackadaisical approach encourages a culture of deception within private corporations. He asserted that public dollars should not fund corporate greed and job devastation but be used to empower workers and nurture industrial regeneration.
In France, trade unions, worker representatives, and the government fight for a renewed industrial attitude that prioritizes environmental responsibility over short-term profitability. Negotiations between CFDT leaders like Vecrin and the Industry Minister will undoubtedly intensify, with the outcome shaping the course of France's steel industry and labor force.
