Landing A Gig in Denmark: Michael Barrett Let's Dig In

Danish career stats scream loud and clear: your professional network is just as crucial as job ads for scoring a new opportunity.

Got Adverts?

Job adverts and personal networks: these are the primary means for nabbing a fresh gig in Denmark, according to the findings of a labor market survey by Statistics Denmark. In the Q1 of this year, a third of working-age Danes secured employment by answering a call-to-action while another third managed to nail their new positions thanks to their network.

As for the remaining portions, it's the local municipality, job center, and unemployment insurance provider (a-kasse) that connect folks with new careers.

This Danish study is part of a broader European project, aiming to shed light on how people navigate their professional paths. The project involves recurring surveys every three months, with 72,000 individuals contributing their insights annually.

Age Game

The 15-24 age group displayed a substantial preference for tapping connections to land a job, with 43% of them finding work through buddies.

Stats Denmark theorizes that this could stem from the relatively larger number of youngsters interacting with educational institutions and job placement services, as well as a higher proportion holding part-time or student positions, which can be easier to snag via informal means.

Sex Factor

When it comes to gender, men lean towards harnessing their networks to land new positions more frequently, with 34% attributing their recent employment to old acquaintances. For women, the percentage drops to 29%. In contrast, women were more likely to have found their jobs through ads at 37%, compared to 27% of men.
