NRW's economic growth is predicted to boost by 0.1% this year. Optimism runs high for a more significant upturn in 2026, as per the latest economic outlook. Here's a summary of the current forecast.

NRW's Economic Outlook: Balancing Hope and Fear

Anticipated Economic Growth in North Rhine-Westphalia Remains Modest in 2025

From the industrial hub of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) comes a mixed economic forecast. While the region, known for its manufacturing, logistics, and energy sectors, has seen improvements, the road ahead may not be smooth sailing.

The Present State

The Industrial and Commerce Chamber of North Rhine-Westphalia (IHK NRW) has declared the economy to be stuck between hope and fear. In a statement, President Ralf Stoffels stated that the economy is tense, even critical in parts, in many companies. Although a decline was averted in early summer, the competitive market and global economic environment continue to pose uncertainties.

This assessment follows the presentation of the second economic report by the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research. Their predictions for NRW economic output show a meager 0.1 percent increase this year. High energy prices and global competition pressure are putting a strain on industries, but the industry is starting to find stability, as per the RWI.

On the Horizon

Looking towards 2026, the projection is more optimistic. The RWI anticipates a total increase of 1.5 percent for NRW and Germany as a whole. This growth is expected to be driven by the special fund of the federal government, which is likely to provide noticeable stimuli for expanding economic performance.

Expert Opinions

NRW Minister of Economics Mona Neubaur (Greens) has emphasized the need for the federal government to ensure competitive energy prices, as expansion of renewables alone might not be sufficient. "Without a temporary bridging energy price and a reliable power plant strategy, we risk stalling the growth," the minister explained.

The industrial sector in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is finding stability, yet the industry's growth may still be challenged by high energy prices and global competition. On a more optimistic note, the RWI-Leibniz Institute projects a 1.5 percent increase for NRW's economy by 2026, with potential stimuli from the federal government's special fund.
