Renovation of the Katharine Peifer Tunnel
Looks like the good ol' Katharine Peifer tunnel in the vibrant city of Karlsruhe is about to get a much-needed makeover! Besides the road and tunnel refurbishment, the internal technical facilities will also get a spruce-up later down the line. Safety measures for the construction site, such as signs and barriers, will be planned and awarded independently.
The construction plans were laid out at the Building and Main Committees on October 5th and 17th, 2023, respectively. And, on May 27, the city council has officially given the green light to company Leonhard Weiss GmbH & Co.KG, based in Göppingen, to handle the renovation. A whopping 16 companies contended for the tender, as per the city's report.
So, when can we expect the work to commence? Mark your calendars for July 2025, with the project slated to wrap up in 2026. The city estimates the entire project will cost a cool 4.5 million euros.
But why all this hassle? Well, the roadway is filled with pits and cracks, and the concrete and steel parts have been severely corroded by those pesky road salts. Add to that, water containing road salts can seep into the tunnel from above, accelerating the damage. In the long run, the structural integrity of the tunnel can no longer be guaranteed.
So, what's on the renovation menu? The whole road surface will get a facelift, a new seal will be laid beneath some sections of asphalt, cracks and joints will be repaired, and the walls and pillars will receive a fresh coat of sealant and protective layer. Additionally, some parts of the tunnel ceiling will be sealed from above.
