Announced figures reveal the average pension size in Kazakhstan
In Kazakhstan, the calculation of the basic pension amount is a combination of an individual's labor experience and mandatory pension contributions. As of June 1, 2025, there are 2,481,000 pensioners in the country.
For those with 10 years or less of participation in the pension system (or none), the basic pension is set at 54% of the subsistence level. This percentage increases by 2% for each additional year worked beyond 10 years. For instance, after 20 years, the basic pension reaches 74% of the pension amount, and after 30 years, it is 94%. For 33 or more years, the pension amount reaches 100%, which is the maximum amount, equivalent to 110% of the subsistence minimum (currently 50,851 tenge).
The length of participation in the pension system includes work experience before January 1, 1998, accumulative experience from mandatory pension contributions after this date, and other socially significant periods such as child care, disabled care, care for elderly persons needing assistance, military service, and certain special categories, with a maximum of 10 years counted towards the pension length.
Since July 1, 2018, state basic pension payments in Kazakhstan are individually assigned to each recipient, taking into account their participation in the pension system. The participation in the pension system also includes the labor experience accumulated in the solidarity system by January 1, 1998, as well as the periods for which mandatory pension contributions (MPC) were paid. It is worth noting that in Kazakhstan, if MPC is paid several times in one month to the Single Accumulative Pension Fund, the participation period in the accumulative system is considered one month.
As of June 1, 2025, the average basic pension amount is 47,688 tenge, while the average solidarity pension amount is 95,814 tenge. Since January 1, 2025, the minimum basic pension amount has been increased to 70% of the subsistence minimum, which is 32,360 tenge.
Since the beginning of the year, 1,745,900,000,000 tenge in pensions have been paid from the republican budget. Of this total, 564,700,000,000 tenge was for basic pension, and 1,181,200,000,000 tenge was for solidarity pension.
The more regular and complete the MPC payments in Kazakhstan, the larger the basic pension payment upon reaching the retirement age. This underscores the importance of consistent contributions to the pension system for a secure retirement.
In terms of personal-finance, consistent mandatory pension contributions (MPC) in Kazakhstan play a crucial role in determining the size of one's basic pension upon retirement. For instance, after 30 years of contributions, the basic pension reaches 94% of the subsistence minimum.
Furthermore, the length of business participation in the pension system, including work experience and MPC payments, significantly impacts one's personal-finance situation and retirement income.
