On June 1, 1975, the S-11 line began serving the residents of Bergisch Gladbach, connecting them to Düsseldorf Airport. As we mark its 50th anniversary, let's take a look back at this remarkable journey.

A Milestone for Bergisch Gladbach

Fifty years ago, the test operation of Cologne's S-11 began on June 1, 1975, between Bergisch Gladbach and Cologne-Chorweiler. This humble beginning marked a significant step for Bergisch Gladbach, linking it to the bustling traffic hub of Cologne while providing a more reliable and timely interval service.

Expansion and Evolution

The S-11 line didn't stop there. In 1985, the line was extended first to Neuss and then to Düsseldorf, addressing the rapidly growing traffic demands on the railway.

Future Plans

Today, improvements to the S-11 line's interval are still much needed. Plans are underway to expand the line between Cologne-Dellbrück and Bergisch Gladbach, doubling the track and preparing the S-11 for a much-needed interval compression.

Ragnar Migenda, First Deputy Mayor of Bergisch Gladbach, strongly advocates for this expansion, stating, "Bergisch Gladbach, the only major city in NRW with only one S-Bahn connection, urgently needs the expansion of this important rail connection."

The Importance of S-11 for Public Transport

Willi Schmitz, Managing Director of the Infrastructure and Project Company Bergisch Gladbach GmbH, emphasizes the S-11's importance for both the city of Bergisch Gladbach and the surrounding areas. He states, "With the hoped-for imminent expansion, this important axis will be strengthened, and public transport will be made even more attractive with additional connections."

Bergisch Gladbach and the Infrastructure and Project Company Bergisch Gladbach GmbH wish the S-11line a happy "round" anniversary on June 1, 2025.

S-Bahn Line S11: A Necessary Connection

The S-Bahn line S11 plays a vital role in connecting Bergisch Gladbach with Düsseldorf Airport, offering essential daily commuting options and improved regional connectivity for travelers. As a crucial component of the Rhine-Ruhr region's S-Bahn network, the S11 line offers reliability, frequent departures, and integration with other public transport modes.

Although specific historical details and expansion plans for the S11 line in Bergisch Gladbach are not widely available, the line remains a vital part of the region's public transport network. As the anniversary of its inception approaches, we can look forward to the planned expansion and the continued service of the S11 line for years to come.
