As the ice roads in central Yakutia, including the main crossing over the Lena River between Yakutsk and Lower Bestakh, have ceased operations, transportation options have become more limited and potentially more expensive. Here's an overview of the current options and associated costs:

1. River Transport (Summer and Ice-Free Period)

  • Mode: Boats, ferries, or river transport along the Lena River.
  • Availability: Mainly during the ice-free months (late spring to early autumn).
  • Time: Travel time depends on vessel type but generally a few hours.
  • Cost: Typically ranges from 500 to 1,500 Russian rubles (approximately $7-$20 USD) per passenger on standard passenger boats. Private or faster boats may charge more.

2. Air Transport

  • Mode: Small regional flights or helicopters.
  • Availability: Year-round, weather permitting, since air transport is not affected by river ice conditions.
  • Time: Very fast, typically less than an hour.
  • Cost: Usually more expensive, ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 rubles ($70-$210 USD) or more, depending on flight availability and booking.

3. All-Season Roads / Overland (If Available)

  • Mode: Car or bus via overland roads.
  • Availability: Currently very limited or non-existent between Yakutsk and Lower Bestakh due to lack of permanent roads in this part of the region.
  • Cost: If possible via detours or combined transport, costs vary considerably and can be quite high due to logistics complexity.

Summary

  • Since ice roads are closed, river transport is the main economical option during ice-free months.
  • Air transport remains the fastest but most costly and less accessible option.
  • Overland travel infrastructure is minimal or lacking in this region, so it’s rarely a feasible alternative.

It's important to note that the Ministry of Transport of Yakutia has issued a reminder about administrative penalties for unauthorized driving on ice. Officials face fines ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 rubles for unauthorized driving, while legal entities face fines ranging from 100,000 to 1,000,000 rubles.

For travelers, free travel is available for children under five and military personnel heading to the special military operation zone. Additionally, humanitarian aid and cargo 200 will also be transported free of charge.

For those planning to travel using air-cushioned vehicles on the Yakutsk - Lower Bestakh route, the fare is currently 2500 rubles. However, it may increase to 5000 rubles if river conditions deteriorate during ice breakup.

If you plan to travel in winter or the shoulder seasons when ice roads are unsafe, booking flights or waiting for river navigation periods are your best options. It’s advisable to check with local transport providers for updated schedules and prices due to changing conditions.
