Airbus A320s in Close Call at Nice Airport: French BEA Investigates
A serious incident occurred at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport on 21 September. A Nouvelair Airbus A320 passed just feet above an easyJet A320 on the runway, sparking an investigation by the French BEA. Both aircraft involved were Airbus A320-214s, with a tail height of 38 feet, 7 inches. The near-miss happened as easyJet flight U24706 was lining up to depart on Runway 04R at around 21:32 UTC. The Nouvelair A320, flight BJ586 from Tunis to Nice, overflew the easyJet plane as it was descending through 50 feet. Remarkably, the Nouvelair flight reported an altitude of 50 feet as it passed over the easyJet A320, with a margin of error of ±25 feet. This means the aircraft could have been as low as 25 feet at the closest point of approach. Following the incident, the Nouvelair flight performed a go-around and landed safely. The easyJet flight, however, returned to the gate and the flight was canceled. The French BEA has classified the incident as serious and has opened an investigation. The names of the Nouvelair crew involved have not been made public. This close call serves as a stark reminder of the importance of air traffic control and pilot vigilance in maintaining aviation safety.
