AIEI Unites Indian Engineering Industry in 1974

The Association of Indian Engineering Industry (AIEI) was formed in 1974 through the merger of the Indian Engineering Association (IEA) and the Engineering Association of India (EAI). This marked a significant step in unifying the engineering industry in India.

The AIEI adopted a federal structure with regional offices, councils, and zonal councils to effectively manage its operations. The first meeting of the AIEI on April 24, 1974, established its Executive Council with P K Nanda as President and Tarun Das as Secretary. The AIEI was registered as a charitable organization, making it eligible for tax exemption.

The Steering Committee, the successor to the IEA's Working Committee and the EAI's Executive Committee, was responsible for recommending major policies, handling financial matters, and dealing with staff and organizational matters. One key guideline was that the AIEI would maintain neutrality and deal with whichever government was in power, on the same terms. The specialized sectors of the IEA and EAI continued as separate divisions under the AIEI.

The AIEI's work and value led to increased member support and financial stability. The Executive Council laid down guidelines, known as the Panchsheel, to define the spirit and workings of the AIEI.

The formation of the AIEI in 1974 brought unity to the Indian engineering industry. Its federal structure, neutral stance, and clear guidelines have contributed to its success and stability.
