UK Government's Electric Car Grant Expands to Include More Models

The UK government's Electric Car Grant (ECG) has seen an expansion, with five new electric vehicle (EV) models from Volkswagen, Cupra, and Peugeot joining the list of eligible vehicles. This brings the total number of eligible models to 27.

The new additions include the Peugeot e-208, e-2008, and e-Rifter, all of which qualify for the lower £1,500 allowance of the grant. Volkswagen's ID.3, a hatchback with a range of 240 to 369 miles, is another eligible model.

The Citroen e-C3, e-C3 Aircross, e-C4, e-C4 X, e-C5 Aircross, e-Berlingo, Nissan Ariya, Micra, Renault 4, 5, Alpine A290, Megane, Scenic, Vauxhall Astra Electric, Combo Life Electric, Corsa Electric, Frontera Electric, and the Vauxhall Mokka Electric and the Peugeot e-Rifter are the other 17 models eligible for the £1,500 grant to date.

The ID.4 SUV, not yet confirmed for the grant, was Volkswagen's best-selling electric car last year. The Cupra Born, which shares a platform with the VW ID.3, has also qualified for the lower £1,500 Band 2 grant.

The DfT expects dozens of models to be eligible for the Electric Car Grant, providing a substantial boost for the industry and saving drivers thousands of pounds. Peugeot will underwrite the ECG amount of £1,500 on new e-408, e-308, e-308 SW, and e-Traveller purchases from today, ahead of official government confirmation.

To qualify for the full £3,750 subsidy under the ECG, a car must meet several key requirements, including being priced at or under £37,000 (including VAT) on the road, having a high sustainability score based on production and battery sourcing, and compliance with government environmental standards verified through the manufacturer application process.

The DfT has said it will update the list of eligible cars 'on a regular basis', and any new models are accompanied by communications to support consumer awareness. The grant was launched on 14 July and is for electric models priced below £37,000.

However, dealers have called the scheme 'shambolic' with consumer confusion rife in showrooms. The DfT is trying to process applications from manufacturers as quickly as possible, but the process has been slow and has led to frustration among dealers and customers.

Nissan's new Leaf EV, which is due to arrive later this year, is not yet eligible for the grant but is anticipated to qualify for the full £3,750 discount when the DfT comes round to approving it. The ID.5 coupe SUV, technically eligible on price grounds, is due to be discontinued next year.

In summary, the main requirements for a car to qualify for the full £3,750 are:

  • Price ≤ £37,000 on the road.
  • High sustainability score based on production and battery sourcing.
  • Compliance with government environmental standards verified through the manufacturer application process.

These conditions ensure the subsidy supports the most environmentally friendly EVs made with conscientious manufacturing practices. The DfT will continue to work with dealers to help more of their customers access the grant.

  1. The expansion of the UK Government's Electric Car Grant (ECG) has broadened the eligibility for several electric vehicles (EV), including those from the automotive industry, such as the Volkswagen ID.3, Peugeot e-208, e-2008, e-Rifter, and Cupra Born.
  2. In addition to the aforementioned cars, other eligible vehicles include electric models from brands like Citroen, Nissan, Renault, Vauxhall, and Peugeot, totaling 27 models to date.
  3. Furthermore, the finance sector is facilitating the transition to electric vehicles by offering savings for drivers in the form of grants; for example, the lower £1,500 allowance of the ECG is offered for models like the Peugeot e-208, e-2008, e-Rifter, and the Cupra Born.
  4. Despite the grant providing a substantial boost for the transportation sector, there have been concerns raised about the administration process of the scheme, leading to confusion among dealers and customers.
