2025 Ford Mustang GTD Review: Remarkably Appealing, Not Comparable to a GT3 RS but Captivating in Its Own Right
The Ford Performance division has taken the helm in the development of a new project, the Mustang GTD, which aspires to redefine the boundaries of American muscle cars. This road-going track car, with a price tag of £315k, is set to challenge the dominance of Porsche, McLaren, and AMG in the high-performance automotive market.
The Mustang GTD has undergone significant revisions in key areas such as drivetrain, aerodynamics, and chassis, transforming it into an RS or Black Series-style road racer. Its low-slung profile, wide tracks, enormous rear wing, and aero channels in the bodywork are testament to its racing pedigree.
The Mustang GTD's mission is clear: to set the first sub-7-minute lap around the Nordschleife, a legendary racetrack in Germany, by a US production car. To achieve this, the team behind the project has been conducting extensive testing at the Thermal Club race circuit, fine-tuning the car's performance on both road and track.
The Mustang GTD's development has been aided by Multimatic, the same technical partner responsible for the last Ford GT and the AMG One. This collaboration has ensured that the Mustang GTD's design and engineering embody a go-big-or-go-home American style, yet with a European mission in mind.
The exterior of the Mustang GTD is a reflection of the engineering depth invested in the project. Its muscular, aggressive design, reminiscent of a Hulk transformation, is designed to be more brutal than a Porsche GT product.
A small number of Mustang GTDs will be available in the UK in left-hand drive, adding to the exclusivity of this high-performance vehicle. With only 300-700 units produced globally each year, the Mustang GTD's price is being compared to a well-specced McLaren 750S, positioning it as a formidable competitor in the luxury sports car market.
Interestingly, the Mustang GTD has a race car counterpart competing in IMSA and GT World Challenge, further demonstrating Ford's commitment to performance and racing excellence. The Mustang GTD's journey from the sun-soaked roads of Palm Springs, California, to the challenging track of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, promises to be an exciting one, as it strives to conquer one of the world's most demanding racetracks.
